Bal Harbor / Oct 27 – 29 2017

20 Jul

The first Bal Harbor Workshop startet in October 2015 and got such great feedback so we continued. 🙂 sign up for our newsletter to be up to date for the next Bal Harbor or other workshops we are currently working on!

The plan is to have a cozy not too big workshop so we can focus more on each of the students, which means the spots will be LIMITED. Bal Harbor brings 8h classes with (mostly) 2 to 3 couples of teachers from all over the world. Our workshop pass includes the workshop and the lunch on Saturday and Sunday which will be vegetarian with meat to add on, so you like.

The Teachers

Sanna and Adam have been dancing and teaching swing together for the past eight years. During this time, they have become well known for the joy and skill that they bring to the social dance floor. Mostly partial to balboa j&j competitions, they have taken numerous titles individually at events such as The Snowball, European Swing Dance Championships and Balboa Castle Camp, as well as placing in various events in Europe and the US during the past several years. In the classroom, they emphasize a solid mix of technique and playfulness resulting in a dynamic and personalized approach to musicality and movement that is accessible to all dancers.

Anna’s life as a dancer begins with square competitions in Ballroom and latin-american dances in her teens. Even if that doesn’t swing it has the benefit that she is able to waltz and foxtrot before she discovers Paris’ Swing scene in 2008. And it still adds to her repertoire today. Because Anna ist most happy when she is able to mix all the dances: Lindy, Bal, 20s Charleston, Collegiate Shag, One Step, Peabody – or whatever the music is asking her to do. As DJ ‘Professor Shorthair’ she only plays songs that she would have to dance to herself. She puts on the wildest parties in Berlin and two crazy weeklong dance events: Swing and Balboa Castle Camp.
Anna likes to lead as much as she likes to follow, because she has a mind of her own. And that’s very visible when you watch her feet.

Nejc: When 15 years old he first saw the movie Swing Kids and since then he tirelessly searched for swing courses throughout Slovenia. Since he couldn’t find any he started the scene himself. Frankie Manning’s video tapes old black and white movies, swing festivals in England Sweden Germany and plenty of dreams. Today he is considered a main culprit for so many people dancing Swing in Slovenia. Experience in the field of contemporary physical theater, music and classical theater allow him a fresh and fun approach to his teaching methods. He pays particular attention to Lindy hop, Balboa, Charleston and jazz movement which he considers essential for any swing dancing. He has been fortunate enough to have had Katja Hrastar, Anna Iaksyna, Abeth Farag and Anna Porzelt as his international teaching partners.

Mel and Jo are dance enthusiasts who dedicate their time to encourage swing dancing in the United Kingdom. Being familiar with lindy hop and blues, their current passion is mastering Balboa and Bal-swing – a journey of continuous learning.

They started salsa dancing in Singapore and after moving to the United Kingdom in 2000 began their journey in swing dancing. After dancing lindy hop, charleston and blues for several years they then fell in love with Balboa and became dedicated to learning this dance from 2008. Their aspirations to be balboa ambassadors stems from their drive to continuously learn and share the passion and knowledge of dance to enthusiasts alike. Over the past 10 years, Mel has been a guest, regular and head DJ, emcee and evening co-ordinator for various events and organisations.

The Workshop

The Workshop will be divided into three Levels. Level 2 and 3 will be seperated according to an audition, so we can make sure the levels are even. The Classes will be separated into 4 lessons, each lesson takes 2h. The classes on Sunday run until round about 5pm. The schedule for the workshop will be sent in a separate e Mail to everybody who registered.

Classes will be held at Billies Tanzstudio / Stresemannstraße 374. Its the same location as the Hamburg Balboa Weekend.

We did change our level description. Level one will be an elef class (everbody leads everybody follows). Level 2 and 3 will join an Audition.

Level 1:
This track is designed for Follows that are eager to learn the other role. You will finally learn leading in a small class – and therefore fast and efficient. You will enjoy training with other experienced dancers that already know how to follow! You will automatically receive a better understanding of both roles. And as you will be able to learn from your partners’ good and bad habits, you will also deepen your own following skills profoundly.

You will have enough time (a whole weekend of classes and social dancing!) to learn all the basics of Balboa. And you will finally be able to dance the whole night through whenever YOU want – and never get stuck on a waiting list ever again…

For Level 2 and 3 you should have danced Balboa for at Least 1,5 years.

Times: check in from 12.00 – 12.30pm, audition on Saturday: 12.00 – 12.30pm.

classes on both days run from 1pm – 6pm.

Please keep in mind there will be an audition. Our teacher have the job to split the students into well – adjusted groups so the final height in all levels is based on the people that signed up.

The Fee

The single workshop fee of 156 Euro includes 8h of classes, the lunch on Saturday and Sunday as well as the admission for the Friday and Saturday party.

You may also buy a partner ticket for 312 Euro. In this case both of you may either pay separately or one party pays for both. Please remember: our workshop is limited. If you do book a partner ticket both of you need to transfer the workshop fee within 7 days otherwise both registrations have to be canceled to give other people the opportunity to attend.

Alternatively you may get a party pass for 25 Euro which includes the admission for the Friday and Saturday Party. Partypass tickets are limited to 50 pieces.

The Registration

Please make sure you have read our terms and conditions carefully BEFORE signing up.

We do offer partner registrations, single registrations and party passes. If you do register single you will end up directly on the waiting list. Please give us a couple of days to get back to you.

Looking forward to see you! Daniel and Ricarda
